Meir, Golda
Born 3 May 1898 as Golda Mabovitz in Kiev, Ukraine. Her family moved to Milwaukee in 1906. In 1921, she and her husband, Morris Meyerson (married 1917, divorced 1945) settled in Palestine. Changed name to Meir in 1956. Held positions in the Jewish Agency and in the World Zionest Organization before 1948, and was one of the signatories to the Declaration of Independence. Ambassador to the Soviet Union 1948-1949, and then elected to the Knesset and appointed Minister of Labour and Social Insurance. Subsequent positions include Minister of Foreign Affairs (1959-1966), and Secretary General of the Labour party (1966-1968). Became Prime Minister on 11 Mar. 1969. Despite winning elections in Dec. 1973, was unable to form an effective government and resigned on 10 Apr. 1974. Died in Jerusalem on 8 Dec. 1978.
