Ben-Eliezer, Benjamin
Minister of Defence under Sharon (Mar 2001-), on the far right of Labour Party. Born Baghdad, 1936. Immigrated to Israel in 1949. Served as an IDF officer, commander in the 1967 and 1973 wars. Member of the IDF Military Mission to Singapore (1970-1973), Commanding Officer in Southren Lebanon from 1977, then Military Governor of “Judea & Samaria” (1978-1981) and as Govt Coordinator of Activities in the ocupied territories (1983-1984). Elected to the Knesset in 1984. Served as Ministry of Construction & Housing under Rabin and Peres (1992-1996). Minister of Communications & Deputy Prime Minister under Barak (Jul 1999-Mar 2001), combined with Construction & Housing portfolio (from Aug 2000). Stood for Labour party leadership in early Sept 201, won after a recount (Dec 2001).
