Former Foreign Minister (1990-2002, 1999-2000) and Finance Minister (1996-1998), has been a minister almost continually since 1977. Born1937, Rabat, Morocco. Led Likud faction in Histadrut from 1960s to early 1980s. Member of Knesset since 1969. Ministerial posts inclouding immigration (1977-1979), housing (1979-1990). In Begin’s Likud govenment was the only minister to oppose the powers given to the Phalangist militia in the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, and he to supported Labour’s calling for a partial withdrawal from Lebanon in 1984. Leader of Gesher (established 1995) after leaving Likud, but entered into coalition with Likud in 1996, resigning in Jan. 1998 in oppsiation to Netanyahu. Made Finance Minister under Barak (1999-2000), but left in Aug 2000 amd gave support to Sharon in the 2001 elections.
